Her poster, The Persian Rosie, was created in support of Women, Life Freedom protests. The movement erupted in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022. The work represents the resistance of Iranian women against the morality police after her death.\r\n\r\nMahsa Amini died in hospital on 16 September having been arrested and beaten by Iran’s ‘morality police’ for breaking the law of ‘inappropriate dress’. News of Mahsa’s death spread through Iran and protests erupted thereafter, with the movement adopting the Kurdish protest slogan “Women, Life, Freedom” (“zan, zendegi, azadi” in Persian). In tandem with the protests on the ground, photographs and videos flooded the internet, with the hashtag of Mahsa’s name in Persian trending on Twitter.\r\n\r\nHaving grown up in Iran, she became motivated for this topic to reach a global audience, largely via Instagram. As such, she has adapted the iconic 1943 J. Howard Miller poster of Rosie the Riveter, the allegorical US icon, representing women working in factories during World War II. She has distinctive bold eyebrows, distinctive of Iranian women, her headscarf clasped in her fist, with her face covered by a mask, which is used to protect identities during protests. Her bicep tattoo reads, ‘no to compulsory hijab’.\r\n\r\nThe poster was made using risograph printing, which is a affordable method of printing able to produce a high volume of duplicates. It was released in various colourways. Foroutan also provided the digital file to freely download and print for protest across the globe, spreading the message far and wide.","physicalDescription":"Risograph poster showing a figure holding her fist up towards her face which is covered which a mask.
