The oil is now in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Holiday began planning the picture in 1864, and it was finally exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in London in 1883. It depicts an episode in the love affair between Dante, the early Renaissance poet, and Beatrice. Dante, waiting on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, sees his beloved walking on the banks of the River Arno with three companions, but she rejects his greeting. It differs considerably from the finished picture. One of the girls behind Beatrice was removed and the costume of the third girl simplified.","physicalDescription":"Study for the painting of Dante and Beatrice","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Holiday, Henry George Alexander","id":"A2207"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"brown ink","id":"x46211"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"black chalk","id":"AAT80058"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"brown and black inks, pencil and black chalk","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Romance","id":"THES253023"},{"text":"Renaissance (Italian)","id":"THES267857"}],"styles":[{"text":"Pre-Raphaelite","id":"AAT21225"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AN6799","2019LH5798"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"PD","shelf":"65","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"painting","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1880","earliest":"1875-01-01","latest":"1884-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss Winifred Holiday","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"228","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2014","earliest":"2014-01-01","latest":"2014-12-31"},"part":"image","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"265","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2014","earliest":"2014-01-01","latest":"2014-12-31"},"part":"image","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"269","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2014","earliest":"2014-01-01","latest":"2014-12-31"},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"343","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2014","earliest":"2014-01-01","latest":"2014-12-31"},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Henry George Alexander Holiday.
