His engravings were popular and were often reprinted and imitated. Piranesi is noted for fantastic interiors and dramatic effects of shadow and perspective. Much of his work exhibits a Romantic distortion which leads to highly imaginative views of Rome, to many of which the term capriccio could properly be applied. He also published some original and inaccurate interpretations of history.
