The images are scanned enlargements of particular areas of painting experiments created out of the artist’s imagination, based on geological knowledge gleaned on polar expeditions she has undertaken.\r\n\r\nAfter focusing for several decades on monumental geological formations in landscape painting, Burko’s concern has in the past twenty years shifted to the impact of industrial and colonial activity on the environment, picturing extraction, deforestation, and extinction. Her aim is to raise awareness to the gravity of the situation, and yet at the same time find the beauty of sublime nature in this moment of ecological collapse. Burko describes her practice as “bearing witness” to the land.","physicalDescription":"Archival pigment print depicting an aerial view of a melting glacier","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Burko, Diane","id":"AUTH385257"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Environment","id":"THES252687"},{"text":"Sustainability","id":"THES285124"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2023NL1656"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"332","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"USA","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2016","earliest":"2016-01-01","latest":"2016-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Diane Burko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"30","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"30","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Print by Diane Burko entitled 'Elegy for San Rafael Glacier, Chile'.
