It consists of a standard teapot with a cylindrical pot placed on top, perforated at the base. The teapot lid is placed on top as a cover for the whole. Coffee is made by pouring boiling water onto the grounds inside the cylinder and drips through into the pot below. The cylinder can then be removed and the lid replaced on the pot. Invented in 1803, the coffee maker is named after its inventor, George Biggin. Wedgwood produced versions of it from about 1805.\nDrabware is a ‘coloured body’ - the ceramic has been coloured by mixing the clay with minerals or metal oxides so that it is coloured throughout, rather than only glazed with a surface colour. This category includes Wedgwood’s jasperware, black basalt, caneware, and the drabware used for this object. \nJosiah Wedgwood I made some experiments with drabware, but there is no evidence it was produced as a product during his lifetime. By 1812 there was a regular production of tea, coffee and breakfast sets in the body.","physicalDescription":"Coffeepot with drabware glaze, moulded floral arabesque decoration, separable coffee percolator and cover, spaniel finial on cover","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"moulded","id":"AAT53134"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware with drabware glaze","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024NY0680"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA34","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA34","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA34","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"coffee pot","id":"x40102"}],[{"text":"covers (closures)","id":"AAT197210"}],[{"text":"percolator","id":"AAT195264"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1820-1840","earliest":"1820-01-01","latest":"1840-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
