Cords could be fed through the centre of the bell pull and connected to wires which passed below stairs and triggered the ringing of a bell when pulled. Wedgwood’s examples are mostly ovoid in shape and jasper dip in body. They are often ornamented or engine-turned. Later 19th century examples tend to be ornamented solid jasperware.\n\nJasperware, a high-fired stoneware, was invented by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s.
