Usually formed with a wide and funnel-shaped mouth and sometimes featuring a spout for emptying. These could be large and available in public spaces for passers-by to spit into, or much smaller for personal use. They were particularly popular with users of chewing-tobacco. Wedgwood created spittoons in Queen’s ware and black basalt. This example is the latter. \n\nWedgwood's black basalt was made using the local black-firing clay known as 'Carr', which could be polished to a high shine.","physicalDescription":"Black basalt spittoon, engine-turned body with wide rim.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"black basalt","id":"x30176"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engine-turned","id":"AAT233401"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engine-turned","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2025PD3694"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES381915"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"spittoon","id":"AAT215618"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1780-1785","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1785-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
