He has said \"My passions are for structures, connections, correspondence, and systems which link the sensual, visual and intellectual worlds.\" This statement is particularly pertinent to this piece, which uses maps and the personal associations that come from a sense of place. \r\n\r\nPhillips has made a number of works which explore his connections to and daily experience of Camberwell and Peckham, the areas where he lives and works. <i>Map Walks Nos. 1 and 2</i> are plans of a walking project using two different sets of media. In the first map he has used acrylic paint on pages from an A-Z guide. He has darkened and blurred the area around the route picked out in yellow; this is intended to indicate a walk at night with yellow standing for the fluorescent sodium street lighting. On the second map, a photograph of the same pages of the A-Z has been worked over with sepia oil paint and two separate routes picked out. They overlap with, but do not replicate the route on the first map. The meaning is ambiguous; these may simply be records of walks undertaken by Phillips himself, or he may be offering us the opportunity to follow in his footsteps, and to experience something of his locality, his influences and his inspiration.","physicalDescription":"Map Walks Nos. 1 and 2 are plans of walking through an area of South London studied through two different sets of media.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Philips, Tom","id":"A2339"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"acrylic paint","id":"AAT15058"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"oil paint","id":"AAT15050"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Acrylic on printed book page; oil paint tint on photograph","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Maps","id":"THES252964"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"},{"text":"Conceptual","id":"AAT69446"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BG0482","2007BR1820","2006BG2437"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WS (VA)","id":"THES49603"},"free":"","case":"R","shelf":"96","box":"L"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"mixed media","id":"AAT163347"}],[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1972-1973","earliest":"1972-01-01","latest":"1973-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"17.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"No. 1","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"No. 1","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"No. 2","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"29.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"No. 2","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased, 1977","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Mixed media painting entitled 'Map Walks Nos. 1 and 2', Tom Phillips.
