This cylindrical black basalt version features encaustic enamel painting.\n\nWedgwood's black basalt, which was made using the local black-firing clay known as 'Carr', which could be polished to a high shine. \n\nMany of Wedgwood's black basalt designs were entirely black, but some like this vase were painted in encaustic enamels. 'Encaustic' painting refers to the technique devised by Josiah Wedgwood which used a mix of ceramic slip and enamel paints to decorate the ceramic body. The anthemion pattern is a stylised form of honeysuckle commonly employed in late 18th century neo-classical Wedgwood decoration.","physicalDescription":"Cylindrical spill vase in black basalt with encaustic enamel paint in anthemion honeysuckle attern around the top and banding around the base.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Black Basalt","id":"x30176"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Hand-painted","id":"x39976"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand-painted black basalt.","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA31","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"vase","id":"AAT132254"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
