The vase was the award for Supporting Artist of the Year. Courtenay received the accolade for her role as Mrs. Railton-Bell in Terence Rattigan’s Separate Tables, directed by Michael Blakemore at the Apollo Theatre. Only twelve similar vases were made for the 1976 Awards, their decorative reliefs modelled on the nine Muses originally designed by John Flaxman the Elder for the 1790 Jasperware vase and cover produced in Staffordshire by Wedgwood. An example of the original is in the V&A’s collection (2416&A-1901). Wedgwood produced a different design of Jasperware vase for the 1978 SWET Awards, decorated with images of David Garrick and Sarah Siddons. That was the last time Wedgwood was commissioned to make vases as awards, possibly because of their cost and fragility.\r\n\r\nThe 1976 Society of West End Theatre Award ceremony was the first major award ceremony celebrating excellence in West End theatre. The Society of West End Theatre was later renamed the Society of London Theatre, and in 1984 the awards became known as the Laurence Olivier Awards. \r\n","physicalDescription":"S.93:1-2023\nBlue and white two-handled Wedgwood vase in Portland blue and white Jasper, the blue body decorated with white bas-relief cameos of Apollo and the nine Muses, the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. \n\nS.93:2-2023\nBlue and white lid for the Wedgwood vase in Portland blue and white Jasper, the blue body decorated with white bas-relief pattern. \n\nS.93:3-2023\nCard label typed and written by the organisers to identify the award, the winner and the year, stored inside the vase. \n\n","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Stoneware","id":"x30197"},{"text":"Jasper ware","id":"x30174"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Jasperware with applied relief decoration","categories":[{"text":"Awards","id":"THES284926"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"104","id":"THES49929"},"free":"","case":"CA022A","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"104","id":"THES49929"},"free":"","case":"CA022A","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"104","id":"THES49929"},"free":"","case":"CA022A","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"awards","id":"AAT26842"}],[{"text":"vases","id":"AAT132254"}],[{"text":"awards","id":"AAT26842"}],[{"text":"lid","id":"AAT45712"}],[{"text":"awards","id":"AAT26842"}],[{"text":"label","id":"AAT28730"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Barlaston","id":"x31989"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1976","earliest":"1976-01-01","latest":"1976-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"2416-1901","id":"O148583"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"S.1095-1996","id":"O1138420"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Given by Julian Courtenay","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"SOCIETY OF WEST END THEATRE AWARDS 1976 / SUPPORTING ARTIST OF THE YEAR / MARGARET COURTENAY","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Incised on the base"},{"content":"'Award six: SUPPORTING ARTIST OF THE YEAR.
