He produces epic cycles of photographs that explore the historical legacy of westward expansion in North America, whether along the railroads, across landscapes of nuclear experiment, at Pre-Columbian sites, or, most recently, attempts to live in the harsh environment of the desert. \n\nThis photograph is drawn from a larger cycle of work dedicated to the landscapes of Los Angeles. Begun on a Guggenheim Fellowship awarded in 2014, Ruwedel is photographing what he describes as the four ‘ecologies’ of Los Angeles: The Rivers, the Western Edge (the coast), the Hills and Canyons, and the Eastern Edge (transitioning into the desert). Recent photographs include subtly toned images of eucalyptus, palm and citrus trees fruiting in an area known as the ‘Inland Empire’, a semi-arid zone between the Mediterranean climate of Southern California’s coastal regions and the harsher weather of the deserts to the east. Ruwedel documents these trees, that characterise Los Angeles but are non-native, which are all slowly disappearing as human activity encroaches into the landscape. \n\nShot in the brilliant Los Angeles sunshine, 'Orchard #27C, 2022', depicts a closely cropped lemon tree. Despite the desolate appearance of the twisting trunk, fruit can be seen in pops of bitter yellow amongst the branches. As with the other photographs by Ruwedel of orchards, dusty warehouses and signs of urban production linger in the background.
