Based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray, its songs (written by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin) include ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘It’s a Hard Knock Life’ which have become popular musical standards.\n\r\nThis costume is from the 2015 UK touring production, which premiered at the Leeds Playhouse in 2011 and transferred to the West End in 2017. It toured again in 2019 and 2023. This specific revival production was directed by Nikolai Foster, choreographed by Nick Winston, with lighting design by Ben Cracknell, sound design by Richard Brooker and set and costume design by Colin Richmond.\n\r\nThis costume (worn during the 'Hard Knock Life' musical number) was designed by Colin Richmond, who has designed over 20 productions for the West Yorkshire Playhouse (now the Leeds Playhouse) and designed extensively in the UK and abroad, including for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Opera North, Leicester Curve, Northern Ballet and the West End.\n\r\nThe costumes designed for ‘Annie’ subverted the typical shapes and colours of the original production (designed by Theoni V. Aldredge), which were imitated in the 1998 revival. Richmond drew on the bold and vibrant shades of the original comic book including browns, greens, blues and oranges to create a colourful but still suitably urban palette. Richmond also aimed to use entirely natural materials, not only to make the costumes breathable and comfortable for the child performers, but to conjure authenticity for the 1930s time period.\n","physicalDescription":"Child's theatre costume comprising a locket, an orange wool cardigan, red-checked cotton dress, yellow patterned cotton pinafore, blue leggings, purple-patterned socks and brown leather lace-up boots, all intentionally distressed with acrylic paint and fabric dyes to look shabby.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Richmond, Colin","id":"AUTH385222"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Farmer, Pat","id":"AUTH385223"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"},{"text":"cotton (textile)","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"},{"text":"acrylic paint","id":"AAT15058"},{"text":"dye","id":"AAT13029"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Knitted wool, machine-sewn cotton","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2022NG4834","2022NG4835","2022NG4836","2022NG4837"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"}],[{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"}],[{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"}],[{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"}],[{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"}],[{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"}],[{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"}],[{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"}],[{"text":"costume","id":"AAT178802"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Ireland","id":"x32424"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"cardigan"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2015","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2015-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"NCOL.395-2022","id":"O1726644"},"association":"Accessory"}],"creditLine":"Given by Annie Tour (UK) Ltd.","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Cardigan: MIA / AVA / ANNIE / 100% MERINO WOOL / MADE IN IRELAND / 8-11 YEARS\r\nDress: MIA / ANNIE\r\nPinafore: AVA / ANNIE / MIA / ANNIE\r\nLeggings: BODEN / 7-8 YEARS\r\nBoots: LOLA / 6.5","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Costume for 'Annie' in the UK touring production of <i>Annie</i>, designed by Colin Richmond, 2015","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"The dress and pinafore are handmade.
