Eliot’s book of poems were the basis for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats, which premiered in London in 1981. The adaptation was notably faithful, translating the poetry into lyrics and keeping a revue-like structure for individual characters such as Macavity, Mr. Mistoffelees and Rum Tum Tugger. Choreographer Gillian Lynne studied how cats move and described her approach as ‘putting a feline wash’ on ‘known and accepted dance forms’.\r\nWritten by T.S.
