This reflects the publisher Lund Humphries and manufacturer Charnaux's policies of employing designers and artists of note such as Edward McKnight Kauffer and Man Ray, Hans Schleger and Frank Dobson - the latter was even commissioned to produce a display figure torso in 1933. In 1932 McKnight Kauffer began a close collaboration with publisher Lund Humphries, who, besides commissioning design work, were also able to provide studio and exhibition space in their new Bedford Square building. McKnight Kauffer evidently collaborated with a number of photographers on Charnaux catalogues. Lund Humphries' first exhibition was a show of work by McKnight Kauffer and the photographer Francis Braguiere in 1933, and included in the show was some of their collaborative work for Charnaux. In 1934 Lund Humphries gave photographer Man Ray his first London exhibition and in 1935 the photographer was working in their building, sharing a studio and darkroom facilities with McKnight Kauffer. The only known collaborative work that they produced was a Charnaux brochure, with Man Ray's photograph of a Venus de Milo cast, in 1935.","physicalDescription":"Charnaux corset catalogue, paper back, stapled spine. The cover design is in black, white and turquoise and features a silver star (comet) with turquoise comet tail running vertically down the centre. In the centre is a white sun set against a black background. The white 'charnaux' lettering in Art Deco style runs horizontally across the bottom with a thin turquoise line runing to the left edge from the top of the 'h'. The eight page catalogue features photographs of models wearing corsets, and descriptions of them. There is a photograph on the inside front cover. The back cover is mostly missing; some turquoise and black ink remains on a fragment.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Kauffer, Edward McKnight","id":"A4244"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Beck, Maurice","id":"A23799"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Charnaux","id":"A23796"},"association":{"text":"commissioned by","id":"x28662"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Percy Lund, Humphreys & Co.","id":"AUTH353415"},"association":{"text":"printer and publisher","id":"x35446"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"photo-lithography","id":"x37713"},{"text":"letterpress printing","id":"AAT178926"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Letterpress and ? in ink on paper","categories":[{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"GG","shelf":"42","box":"B(I)"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1933-1935","earliest":"1933-01-01","latest":"1935-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"charmaux","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Lettering across front cover."}],"objectHistory":"Acquired in connection with the display A Fine Line - Commercial Wood Engraving in Britain, V&A, 10 October 1994 - 26 March 1994.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Charnaux corset catalogue; British, ca. 1930-1939.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"corsets","id":"AAT210582"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.376-1994"],"accessionNumberNum":"376","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1994,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-01-12","recordCreationDate":"2008-11-13","availableToBook":false}}
