This reflects the publisher Lund Humphries and manufacturer Charnaux's policies of employing designers and artists of note such as Edward McKnight Kauffer and Man Ray, Hans Schleger and Frank Dobson - the latter was even commissioned to produce a display figure torso in 1933. Publisher Lund Humphries, besides commissioning design work, were also able to provide studio and exhibition space in their new Bedford Square building. In 1934 Lund Humphries held an exhibition of Hans Schleger (Zero), who arrived in England in 1932 from Germany, and became a close friend of McKnight Kauffer. Schleger was to become one of the leading graphic designers in Britain, producing prestigious work for London Transport, GPO, Shell and BP, as well as government war posters.","physicalDescription":"Charnaux corset catalogue, paper back, stapled spine, with a cover designed by Zero (Hans Schleger). The design is in black and white and features a woman's face in Art Deco style, black with the lines of eyebrows, nose and mouth and wavy hair as black and white line highlights. To the right is an image of a corset showing it's lace pattern in white lines, on a model showing the neck to thigh area only. The same image is also printed in pale pink on white background on the inside cover. The 'Charnaux' lettering across the bottom of the front cover is typical Art Deco style in brown and black on white background. The catalogue of twelve pages includes illustrations of a range of corsets with descriptions on every page and care instructions are printed on the inside back cover.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Schleger, Hans","id":"A7808"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Charnaux","id":"A23796"},"association":{"text":"commissioned by","id":"x28662"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Cockayne & Co., Ltd.","id":"A23797"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Percy Lund, Humphreys & Co.","id":"AUTH353415"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":"possibly?"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"photo-lithography","id":"x37713"},{"text":"letterpress printing","id":"AAT178926"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Letterpress and ? in ink on paper","categories":[{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"GG","shelf":"42","box":"B(I)"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1933-1935","earliest":"1933-01-01","latest":"1935-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"20.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"ZERO","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Artist signature in image, lower right corner."},{"content":"charmaux","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Lettering across bottom."}],"objectHistory":"Acquired in connection with the display A Fine Line - Commercial Wood Engraving in Britain, V&A, 10 October 1994 - 26 March 1994.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Charnaux corset catalogue, cover designed by Zero (Hans Schleger); British, ca. 1930-1939.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"face","id":"AAT33561"},{"text":"corsets","id":"AAT210582"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.379-1994"],"accessionNumberNum":"379","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1994,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-19","recordCreationDate":"2008-11-13","availableToBook":false}}
