The sea in his living environment has provided endless inspiration, and his intricately carved pieces are finished with a unique sand glaze that he developed with local materials. Sakiyama studied ceramics in the Crafts Department of the Osaka University of Arts in 1981 and established his own Hidaka-gama kiln in 1987. He has since regularly exhibited at museums, galleries and art fairs worldwide. \n\r\nWhile his early works were mainly utilitarian objects, shaping sculptural forms that can be enjoyed from every angle has become his prime interest. As seen in this example, the exterior and interior of his vessels are seamlessly joined, exemplifying the sculptural quality of his creation. \r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sakiyama, Takayuki","id":"AUTH387539"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2022NH0959","2022NH0960","2022NH0961","2022NH0962","2022NH0963"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"141","id":"THES49870"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"AAT47090"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2022","earliest":"2022-01-01","latest":"2022-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchase funded by Christopher Gorman-Evans","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"490","unit":"mm","qualifier":"measured in the store, approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"575","unit":"mm","qualifier":"maximum diameter. measured in store, approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Ceramic sculpture, 'Chōtō - Listening to the Waves', glazed stoneware, 2022, by Sakiyama Takayuki (b.1958), Japan, modern crafts, ceramics \r\n崎山 隆之 (1958-) 聴涛 2022年","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"For Takayuki Sakiyama, the sea near his home on Japan’s Izu peninsula provides endless inspiration.
