In 1809 he was imprisoned by the Emperor Napoleon and returned to Rome in 1814. \r\n\r\nThere is a similar earthenware statuette in the collections of the Ashmolean museum. This suggests that the statuette may have been produced by the Civita Castellana factory, either shortly after its foundation of when the Pope returned to the Vatican in May 1814.","physicalDescription":"Group, terracotta, painted and gilt. Pius VII (Gregorio Barnaba Luigi Chiaramonti, b. 1742, elected Pope 1800, d. 1823) on horseback. The pope is represented in the act of benediction wearing a white mantelletto and rochetto with a scarlet mozzetto and embroidered stole round his shoulders; on his head is a scarlet hat. The white horse has scarlet and gold trappings, the saddle bieng covered with a scarlet and gold saddle-cloth. On both sides of the pedestal beneath the horse, which is richly caparisoned, are the arms of the Pope.
