Taken by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (a Nazi Party organization dedicated to looting of cultural property, mostly from the Jewish community) the photographs depict a pair of still life paintings which were stolen from Bacri Frères, a Parisian art and antiquities gallery in 1942. According to the ERR’s records they were intended for Hermann Goering’s personal collection. The two paintings were last registered at 54 Avenue d’lena, Paris, on 8 January 1943, but there the paper trail ends. They were never recovered, and their fate remains unknown.\r\n\r\nEmbracing the paintings’ history and mysterious disappearance, Oppenheim seized on the archival images, the only record of their existence. Working from negatives of the ERR photographs, she employed a ‘smoke’ technique, using a flame in the darkroom to which solarizes the print.  The result transforms and abstracts these historical documents into new images which are never visible in their entirety. In these works, fire becomes a generative force, rather than a destructive one, allowing not for a recreation of what was lost but rather the creation of a new artwork based on the photographic traces left behind.\r\n","physicalDescription":"A photograph of an abstracted, solarized floral surface.
