The hand-sewn garment is constructed from a single piece of uncut fabric draped directly on the body and sewn together into irregularly shaped panels, gathered at each seam to create regular ruching across the surface of the dress. The top fabric sits upon a complex internal structure hand-moulded from upcycled insulation foam, wadding and wool, creating an asymmetrical silhouette that obscures the body underneath. The dress is accompanied with high-heeled platform boots of leather. It is made from old carpets, fishing nets, pre-consumer waste and discarded garments assembled through an international collection programme. The materials are broken down to the same fibre as fossil-based nylon before being stretched to match nylon’s elasticity and spun into consumer products. As ECONYL®, like nylon, doesn’t break down, it can infinitely be made into new fabrics using the same process. ECONYL® is certified by OEKO-TEX®’s STANDARD 100, which ensures the product doesn’t harm human health, and by REACH, a European Union regulation that helps protect human health and the environment from risks posed by chemicals. Malone sources ECONYL®, often in end-of-line colours, directly from the company.
