A demand for likenesses of the famous – historical and contemporary – was fulfilled in a wide range of media, including oil paintings, watercolours, silhouettes, prints, busts and statues. Josiah was quick to realise the potential benefits to his business and met the demand for images of famous people, first in black basalt, then in his new jasper body. Large numbers of medallions depicting heroes and popular figures were available. \nCameos came to be used in an even greater variety of ways than Josiah enumerated: on clock cases and pendulums, chatelaines, watch cases and keys, snuff-, patch- and work-boxes, needle- and toothpick- cases, writing desks and sword hilts, metal vases, urns and lamps, perfume bottles, opera glasses and coach panels. \nCameos might be mounted in cut steel or ormolu settings. Men adorned their coats with large jasper buttons, their shoes with jasper-set buckles. Women decorated their costumes with brooches and dress-buckles, wearing bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings and lockets inset with Wedgwood cameos.","physicalDescription":"Oval buckle in cut-steel with a blue and white jasper medallion depicting 'Poor Maria'","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"},{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"AAT53134"},{"text":"sprigged","id":"x44239"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"jasper in cut-steel mount","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2023NM8844"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG1","id":"THES264736"},"free":"","case":"CA26","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"buckle","id":"AAT239260"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1790","earliest":"1785-01-01","latest":"1794-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
