Educated in the U.S. and Canada, Mark Ruwedel has been photographing the landscapes of the western United States and the Pacific Northwest for nearly forty years. Producing epic cycles of photographs, he concentrates on the historical legacy of westward expansion in North America, whether along the railroads, across landscapes of nuclear experiment, at Pre-Columbian sites, or, most recently, attempts to live in the harsh environment of the desert. \n\nThis photograph is from Ruwedel’s major series, Westward: the Course of Empire (1995-2008). In this series, the artist photographed the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century railway lines that cut a path across the landscapes of the American and Canadian West.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mark Ruwedel","id":"AUTH362085"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gelatin silver","id":"AAT139114"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"gelatin silver prints dry mounted on archival mat board","categories":[{"text":"Photographic Studies","id":"THES283122"},{"text":"Landscapes","id":"THES250800"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"DOP","id":"THES291628"},"images":["2025PJ8762"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"985","box":"D"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1999","earliest":"1999-01-01","latest":"1999-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"American Friends of the V&A through the generosity of Richard Morehouse","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"406","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"508","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by Mark Ruwedel, 'Columbia and Western #3' from the series 'Westward, the Course of Empire', 1999","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.375-2026"],"accessionNumberNum":"375","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":2026,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-29","recordCreationDate":"2022-05-20","availableToBook":false}}
