Cole kept a daily diary, which is brief and business-like, but also these more expansive notes written during his travels through Europe between 1830 and 1880. Aside from describing and remarking on the sites and institutions he visited along the way, Cole used these journals as a space to think about the subjects that dominated his career: art and design education, architecture and the management of museums and collections. \r\nThis journal is of a journey to Vienna between November and December 1851, passing through Belgium and the German states, in which Cole is accompanied by his close friend and associate, the potter Herbert Minton. The goal of their journey was to deliver a gift from Queen Victoria – a valuable dessert service produced by Minton for the Great exhibition earlier in 1851 – to the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. \r\nAs Cole’s notes reveal, they make use of their trip to visit numerous museums and landmarks, as well as art and design institutions. A particular focal point is given by Cole and Minton’s shared interest in the production of ceramics in the key manufacturing centres of Dresden/Meissen, Berlin and Vienna. Cole’s notes are accompanied by sketches of landscapes, people and objects he sees, as well as travel documents (hotel and rail brochures, bills and receipts, shipping orders), that further bring the journey to life. \n","physicalDescription":"Cole's diary of the journey comprises 52 numbered pages, written in ink with ink sketches, interleaved with blank sheets.\r\nFollowing the journal are six letters from Minton to Cole, dated Dec. 29, 1851-Mar. 22, 1852.\r\nAlso bound in the volume are two printed maps, marked with the journey; an engraved panoramic view of Cologne; three timetables; two playbills; a menu; a price list from the Königlichen Porzellan-Manufaktur in Berlin; and 34 miscellaneous bills (chiefly from hotels) and receipts.\r\nTitle-page dated 1870.\r\nTitle-page inscribed in ink: Henry Cole, his book 1872.\n\r\nBinding: Half bound [in 1870?] in red morocco with red cloth over boards; spine title in gold letters; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt; \"bound by Riviere\" at foot of first free endpaper.
