Cole kept a daily diary, which is brief and business-like, but also these more expansive notes written during his travels through Europe between 1830 and 1880. Aside from describing and remarking on the sites and institutions he visited along the way, Cole used these journals as a space to think about the subjects that dominated his career: art and design education, architecture and the management of museums and collections.\r\nThis journal documents a journey to Palermo (Sicily), passing through France, Switzerland and Italy and returning through the German States, between October and December 1868. Cole is accompanied by Lieut.-Col. Henry Y. D. Scott, an architect and army officer in the Royal Engineers, seconded to oversee ongoing construction for the South Kensington Museum. The main purpose of the journey was to visit various buildings across Italy featuring wall and ceiling mosaics and which could serve as examples for mosaic designs to be incorporated in new buildings in South Kensington. As with previous trips, Cole makes copious notes on the architecture of churches, institutions and public buildings along the way. He also takes the opportunity to visit artists, manufacturers, dealers and collectors to acquire both historical and contemporary objects for the South Kensington Museums’ growing collections. His notes are accompanied by detailed sketches of architecture and objects. Bound into the back of the diary is a printed report on the various mosaics Cole and Scott encountered on the journey.
