The Tri-Lo is a strong example of how familiar objects such as bicycles can be redesigned for children with disabilities. \r\n\r\nThe original sample versions of the Tri-Lo Handcycle were produced in 1970, a patent  was awarded on 28th February 1975 for unique design features on the product. This specific model was designed around 2017.\r\n\r\nThe front wheel is driven by hand cranks, which also control steering and braking. The  low centre of gravity, broad base and two coasting back wheels ensure the handcycle is  stable and easy to cycle for someone inexperienced. A broad seat with a padded  backrest and a pelvic strap ensures a comfortable seating position when cycling for a  child with spina bifida. A parent handle can be added if assistance is needed.\r\n\r\nThe handcycle balances its physical accessibility with playfulness. The bold graphics, chunky tyres, bright colours and sporty style of the cycle mimic that of a BMX. As a model  designed for young children, a toy basket can be strapped to the back of the handcycle.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Theraplay mini tri-lo, hand powered tricycle with bag of accessories","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["B.38-2023"],"accessionNumberNum":"38","accessionNumberPrefix":"B","accessionYear":2023,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-15","recordCreationDate":"2022-05-19","availableToBook":false}}
