This mug is neither the Club mug, nor the Supports Club mug, but was probably made speculatively to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the club. The slogan is inaccurate – 1886 was the founding of the club in Woolwich, it did not move to Highbury until some years later. It was purchased for £2.50 in Chapel Market, Islington, shortly before Christmas 1990, from a stall specialising in football club scarves, hats, posters and calendars. The mug was offered as part of ‘set’ including an Arsenal scarf and woolly hat.\r\n\r\nPart of a large collection of mugs acquired in 1991. This group [C.84 to 105-1991] were brought together from various sources and were presented by the donors - the Curator and Deputy Curators of the Ceramics and Glass Section. The collection aims to illustrate the various uses of the 'Mug as bearer of message' over the past decade.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Mug, white earthenware with printed decoration and glazed, designed possibly 1986, made in England, ca. 1990.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.91-1991"],"accessionNumberNum":"91","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1991,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-02-11","recordCreationDate":"2008-11-05","availableToBook":false}}
