Made at a time when decorative vases were hugely popular for display in private homes, Wedgwood boasted of his intention of becoming 'Vase Maker General to the Universe' in 1769.\r\n\r\nThis body of this vase is black basalt, a black stoneware that was developed by Josiah Wedgwood from the traditional local black pottery in the 1760s and introduced to the market in 1768. It was richer in colour due to the addition of manganese and also finer in texture and very hard due to the use of sifted ball clay and the use of a very high firing temperature. The new clay was ideal for finely turned shapes with polished surfaces and detailed modelling. \n\nWedgwood based the shape of this vase on a design published in 1760 by Joseph Marie Vien (born Montpelier, France, in 1716, died in Paris in 1809). As a young artist, Vien had won the Grand Prix de Rome which enabled him to spend five years in Rome. This exposure to classical antiquity deeply influenced him and he was to become one of the earliest exponents of the neo-classical taste in France. Wedgwood faithfully copied the basic shape of Vien's design.\n\r\nAn example of a shape number one vase is featured at Josiah I's elbow in the family portrait painted by George Stubbs. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Vase and cover, black basalt; oviform vase, distinct shoulder, incurved neck with projecting rim, each side with a handle in the form of a satyr's head with long horns rising up and curving over to join the rim, with circular foot and mounted on a square black basalt pedestal; circular and concical cover with globe shape finial.
