Apart from a handful of exceptional pieces, no mark appeared on Staffordshire pottery until Wedgwood. From 1769, when the new factory at Etruria opened, all wares made by the company featured a variation of the 'Wedgwood' mark. This block mould, made of fired clay, contains the mark 'Wedgwood & Bentley Etruria' in the round. The mould would have been used to create a stamp which could then be used to impress the mark onto the base of wares. This 'Wedgwood & Bentley' mark was used between 1769 and 1780, often underneath plinths of large basalt vases and pedestals of large busts and figures. Thomas Bentley (1730-80) was Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-95)'s business partner in the production of ornamental wares and together they went into partnership as 'Wedgwood & Bentley' from 1767 to 1780. The company was one of the first to mark products with the full company name, which can be seen as an early attempt by Josiah I to expand awareness of the brand.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"Manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"fired clay","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2026PP2121","2026PP2122"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG1","id":"THES264736"},"free":"","case":"CA10.1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"mould","id":"AAT24814"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1769 - 1780","earliest":"1769-01-01","latest":"1780-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
