In 1887, he relocated to Chicago, finding work with two different architectural businesse before being employed by Adler and Sullivan. \n\nIn the 1890s, Wright embarked on his first independent commission, The William H. Winslow House in River Forest, Illinois. Wright also designed interiors, furniture and cities in a prolific 72-year career, reflecting his vision of an ideal American society. Wright shared the social reform principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, believing that art and design had a role to play in improving society and everyday life, drawing inspiration from many sources, including nature.\n\nJoyce and John Rayward commissioned Wright to design and build the Rayward House, also known as <i>Tirranna,</i> in New Caan, Connecticut. It was constructed in 1955 using standard concrete block, glass, and wood. This chair was part of the furniture designed by Wright for this home and served as an integral part of the architectural scheme.","physicalDescription":"A tall-backed spindle chair made of wood featuring a solid seat frame and cushion, and a high, vertical backrest.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wright, Frank Lloyd","id":"A1419"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12184"},{"text":"plywood","id":"AAT12849"}],"techniques":[{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Philippine mahogany, solid and veneer on plywood.","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2015HU0674"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342289"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342289"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chair","id":""}],[{"text":"Cushion","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1956-1958","earliest":"1956-01-01","latest":"1958-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Accepted in lieu of Inheritance Tax by H M Government from the estate of Beatrix Cooper and allocated to the V&A, 2021","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"127.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"10/02/2021","earliest":"2021-02-10","latest":"2021-02-10"},"part":"whole","note":"Measurements taken from object by Max Donnelly."},{"dimension":"Width","value":"50.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"10/02/2021","earliest":"2021-02-10","latest":"2021-02-10"},"part":"whole","note":"Measurements taken from object by Max Donnelly."},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"56","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"10/02/2021","earliest":"2021-02-10","latest":"2021-02-10"},"part":"whole","note":"Measurements taken from object by Max Donnelly."},{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"10/02/2021","earliest":"2021-02-10","latest":"2021-02-10"},"part":"cushion","note":"Measurements taken from object by Max Donnelly."},{"dimension":"Width","value":"54","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"10/02/2021","earliest":"2021-02-10","latest":"2021-02-10"},"part":"cushion","note":"Measurements taken from object by Max Donnelly."},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"48","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"10/02/2021","earliest":"2021-02-10","latest":"2021-02-10"},"part":"cushion","note":"Measurements taken from object by Max Donnelly."}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Lent anonymously to the Museum since 1982.\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"High-backed chair with cushion, Frank Lloyd Wright, designed for Rayward House, made in the United States, 1956-1958","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[{"text":"Rayward House","id":"THES268720"}],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"dining chairs","id":"AAT38379"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["W.15:1-2021","W.15:2-2021"],"accessionNumberNum":"15","accessionNumberPrefix":"W","accessionYear":2021,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Cushion","Chair"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-10-22","recordCreationDate":"2008-11-04","availableToBook":false}}
