Born in 1845 into a family of potters, Clement worked for his father before setting up his own pottery in 1883 in Golfe-Juan, near Vallauris in the south of France. Lucien Levy-Dhurmer was employed as artistic director, a talented designer who was interested in historic Spanish lustreware and drew on his collection of this material for inspiration at the art pottery. The pair were awarded a medal for their lustreware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. This pot exhibits typical art nouveau decoration, with a detailed lustre surface of swirling plants and four protruding tendrils, which give the impression of organic growths.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Massier, Clément","id":"A17417"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Lustre","id":"x29344"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, lustre decoration","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Art Pottery","id":"THES49021"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2023NJ3784"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES387769"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":"AAT132254"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Golfe-Juan","id":"x39707"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1890-1900","earliest":"1885-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mr John Timlin","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Small vase, earthenware with lustre decoration and four tendrils attached to the body, by Clement Massier, France, about 1890-1900","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.54-2022"],"accessionNumberNum":"54","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2022,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-16","recordCreationDate":"2022-03-16","availableToBook":true}}
