Despite the relatively short time Ravilious worked for Wedgwood - owing to his tragic death during active service in 1942 - his designs remained a staple of modern Queen's Ware production well into the post-war period.\n\nDesigned in 1938 but manufactured from 1953, the 'Travel' service features trains, boats, and hot air balloons on the distinctive Windsor Grey colourway on Queen's Ware. The design combines a nostalgic vision of the British landscape and transportation, which chimed with the post-war optimism of the 'Britain Can Make It' exhibition.","physicalDescription":"Saucer, grey coloured earthenware, glazed, edge with continual black curved patterns in a descending size, interpersed with blue enamel semi circles","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ravilious, Eric","id":"A878"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"Manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"},{"text":"hand-painted","id":"x39976"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Glazed Earthenware with lithographic and hand-painted decoration.","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024NV8842","2022ND7615"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Saucer","id":"AAT195535"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Barlaston","id":"x31989"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1953-1954","earliest":"1953-01-01","latest":"1954-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Philip Angus in 2022.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"138","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Gifted by Philip Angus in 2022.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Saucer, ‘Travel’, earthenware, designed by Eric Ravilious for Josiah Wedgwood and Sons, Barlaston, 1953-4","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"52.15 Part dinner service; eggcup; decorated with Travel.
