His original design places the dress on a little plinth, reminiscent of a Meissen figurine, which is an indication to the maker of the effect he wished to achieve. The maker has executed the floral design in machine embroidery, using pale shades, and achieving something of the delicacy of Meissen porcelain. \r\nHowever, different makers will have different ways of achieving their effects, and The Theatre Museum owns another version of this dress, in which the decorations on the underskirt are cut from American cloth, a highly glazed cotton, and appliqued onto the skirt, which gives a much bolder and harder effect. \r\nIn the 1920s, there was no specialist training for theatre designers, and many productions were designed by artists whose main experience was in illustration and design. George Sheringham studied art at the Slade School and in Paris, before making his reputation as an illustrator, notably for books by Conan Doyle and Max Beerbohm. This led to various theatrical commissions for both drama and ballet.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sheringham, George","id":"A5319"},"association":{"text":"Costume designer","id":"AAT163428"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Costumes","id":"THES269529"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2019LH7069","2017KM6660","2017KM6667","2017KM6668"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"014","id":"THES308770"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"014","id":"THES308770"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"skirt","id":""}],[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Opera costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Bodice","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1929","earliest":"1929-01-01","latest":"1929-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"S.340-1985","id":"O1115024"},"association":"Version"}],"creditLine":"Given by","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"44","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"11/12/2017","earliest":"2017-12-11","latest":"2017-12-11"},"part":"Bodice, collar to hem","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"11/12/2017","earliest":"2017-12-11","latest":"2017-12-11"},"part":"Bodice, across shoulders","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"102","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"11/12/2017","earliest":"2017-12-11","latest":"2017-12-11"},"part":"Skirt, waist to hem","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"32","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"11/12/2017","earliest":"2017-12-11","latest":"2017-12-11"},"part":"Skirt, waist","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"6.25","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"11/12/2017","earliest":"2017-12-11","latest":"2017-12-11"},"part":"Weight of skirt and bodice in box","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The costume was designed by George Sheringham for Phyllis in the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera Iolanthe.
