At the time the vases were made, the Tsuji workshop was being run by its 11th generation head, Tsuji Katsuzo. The Hyochien decorating workshop was established in Tokyo in 1873. It specialised in making products for export to the west. The vases were part of a group of over 200 ceramics bought on behalf of the V&A by the Japanese Exposition commissioners with funds provided by Philip Cunliffe-Owen, an ardent Japanophile who was director of the V&A from 1874 to 1893. The instructions sent to the commissioners were that they should ‘make an historical collection of porcelain and pottery from the earliest period until the present time, to be formed in such a way as to give fully the history of the art.’","physicalDescription":"Painted with carps and tortoises, one of a pair with 367A-1877","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Tsuji workshop","id":"A23678"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Hyochien workshop","id":"A23679"},"association":{"text":"decorator","id":"x30812"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain decorated in underglaze blue, overglaze enamels and gold","categories":[{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[{"text":"Meiji","id":"AAT18567"},{"text":"Polychrome","id":"x44055"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AM8144"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"20","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Arita","id":"x31992"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Arita","id":"x31992"},"association":{"text":"decorated","id":"AAT56257"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Tokyo (city)","id":"x32430"},"association":{"text":"decorated","id":"AAT56257"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1875","earliest":"1875-01-01","latest":"1875-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"367A-1877","id":"O187845"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Widest part","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Base","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions as published in Augustus Franks, Japanese Pottery","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Made by Tsuji of Hizen","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Painted by Hyochien of Tokyo, Japan","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from the Japanese Commissioners for the Philadelphia Exposition of 1876, accessioned in 1877.
