Fukagawa Eizaemon (1833-1889), who took over the running of the family workshop in 1861, was one of the founders of the famous Koransha Company. This was set up in 1875, the year in which this dish was made, with the specific aim of producing ceramics for export. Prior to entering the V&A's collection, the dish was exhibited in the USA at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876.
