Its plain design was part of the movement in fashion away from what were considered by some to be the extravagant excesses of the late eighteenth century.  The move was towards a simpler, purer style of dress and footwear that was influenced by designs from classical antiquity. \r\n\r\nSlippers or 'sandal shoes', continued to be worn well into the mid-century although by the 1850s they were used mainly for formal wear in black or white.  This pair of shoes is a typical example of the sandal style.  The thin leather sole and delicately hand-stitched satin uppers were relatively simple and cheap to produce.  Retailers or wearers would then customise shoes with rosettes, bows or ankle ties.  There is evidence that this pair once had silk ribbon ankle ties sewn into the sides, but only fragments of these remain.  The small silk bow at the throat of each shoe, which would commonly have been covered with a larger more elaborate bow or rosette, appears never to have been covered.","physicalDescription":"Black satin uppers with edges bound with black silk, pair of folded seams at sides and small black silk bow at throat; cream leather insole and sock, cream cotton lining, remnants of black silk ribbon ties sewn into sides of shoes at seams; brown leather sole.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Melnotte","id":"A23689"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"satin","id":"AAT132902"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"},{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk satin, with silk ribbon, cotton  and leather, sewn with cotton thread","categories":[{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2007BP8736","2014HJ2795","2014HJ2824"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES326011"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES326011"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}],[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1824","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1824-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"MA/1/H926","id":"ARC163180"},"association":"Archive record"}],"creditLine":"Given by Messrs Harrods Ltd.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"each shoe","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"5.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"each shoe","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"23.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"each shoe","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Printed paper maker's label stuck to insole of right shoe, 'A [shield with flags at either side] PARIS / No 20, Rue de la Paix / MELNOTTE / Bté de L.L.M.M.  la Reine des / Français et la Reine de Belges. / 23, Old Bond Street. / London.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"These were part of a very large collection of items of dress and accessories which was given to the Museum by Harrods, the department store, in 1913. The collection had been formed by the artist Talbot Hughes, who wrote a book on the history of dress, illustrated with photographs of models wearing items from his collection. A large firm in America had offered to buy the collection and present it to the Metropolitan Museum, New York, but Hughes did not want it to go abroad. At the suggestion of Cecil Harcourt Smith of the V&A, Harrods bought it for £2,500 and gave it to the Museum for the 'public good'. Harrods displayed the collection for three weeks in December 1913.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pair of shoes, F, 1800-1824, French; Melnotte; black satin with silk edging and bow","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.527A-1913","T.527-1913"],"accessionNumberNum":"527","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1913,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Shoe [1]","Shoe [2]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-10-01","recordCreationDate":"2008-10-29","availableToBook":true}}
