Although Devonshire marble had been quarried from the eighteenth century (and was used in the dining room at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, for example), it did not reach a wide audience until the nineteenth century. This was spurred on by growing popular interest in geology and natural history, improved transport links and clever marketing. It came to be principally employed as facings and paving for religious and secular buildings, but also as decoration for tabletops and fire surrounds, and in small items such as paperweights, thermometers, inkstands and jewellery. However, cheaper, imported Italian marbles eventually contributed to the demise of the Devonshire marble industry.","physicalDescription":"This octagonal table is veneered with thirty-four different types of \"Devonshire marble\" coloured in various shades of whites, blacks, brown, reds, yellows, and one of green. The table features upwards of twenty fossil specimens (chiefly formed by corals and algae), skilfully cut at different angles and juxtaposed for contrast and decorative effect. Fillongley Hall had been acquired in 1823 by Rev. George William Bowyer Adderley (1787-1872) who, with his wife Caroline, soon set about rebuilding it. Following George Adderley’s death in 1872, Fillongley Hall was inherited by his great-nephew, Henry Arden Adderley, 5th Baron Norton (1848-1945). In 2006 Lord and Lady Norton sold Fillongley Hall and estate. The table itself was sold by Sotheby’s in April 2011 to the dealer James Graham-Stewart, from whom it was purchased by the Walkdens later that year.
