During his life, Forster collected a vast library which included most manuscripts of Dickens’s novels. He bequeathed this collection to his wife until her death; whereupon it would pass to what was then the South Kensington Museum (renamed the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1899), so that it could be used by the nation. The manuscripts Forster bequeathed continue to be an invaluable resource to scholars and researchers, providing information about Dickens’s creative process. \r\nOriginally written on loose leaves, it was later bound in four volumes, but following extensive conservation work, it is now rehoused in eight volumes.\n","physicalDescription":"714 leaves, bound in eight volumes.\nCollation: v.1 (4, 1-91), v.2 (92-188), v.3 (189-267), v.4 (268-363), v.5 (2, 364-446), v.6 (447-536), v.7 (537-626), v.8 (627-714).\r\nPreviously bound in 4 volumes, then rebound in 1994 in brown morocco half leather with marbled papers over boards, in drop back solander boxes.\nThe first 4 leaves of vol.1 comprise a letter to John Forster from Dickens, dated 17 Jan. 1841, and three leaves of memorandums for the story.\r\nWritten on handmade wove writing paper, in iron gall and blue ink. Some leaves have cancelled text on versos.\r\nThe writing paper is made up of 'Large Post' folio sheets that have been folded into bifolios, producing a 'Large Post' quarto, which were then torn in half by Dickens, mostly before writing. All manuscript leaves therefore have one torn side. \r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Charles Dickens","id":"A8340"},"association":{"text":"author","id":"AAT25492"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"goatskin","id":"AAT255984"}],"techniques":[{"text":"handwriting","id":"AAT252927"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"National Art Library","id":"THES271541"},{"text":"Books","id":"THES48986"},{"text":"Literature","id":"THES284210"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"NAL","id":"THES48605"},"images":["2012FL2577","2012FL2586","2012FL2585"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"NAL","id":"THES251738"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"manuscript","id":"AAT28569"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"written","id":"x34827"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"written","id":"x34827"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1840-1841","earliest":"1840-01-01","latest":"1841-12-31"},"association":{"text":"written","id":"x34827"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"38041012044772","id":"O1708182"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"38041012044780","id":"O1708183"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"38041012044798","id":"O1708184"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"38041012044806","id":"O1708185"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"38041012044814","id":"O1708186"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"38041012044822","id":"O1708187"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"38041012044830","id":"O1708188"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"binding","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Charles Dickens to John Forster; bequeathed by John Forster 1876.
