Millions of pounds worth of goods crossed the ocean's trade routes every year, mostly in the heavily guarded convoys of East Indiamen. During the Napoleonic Wars, the French recognised the economic importance of these convoys. In 1808 they sent a strong frigate squadron commanded by Jacques Hamelin to augment the forces available on the island bases of Île Bonaparte and Île de France and attack British shipping in the region. In 1810, British forces including volunteers from the native forces of the three Indian Presidencies took part, successfully removed the French threat by invading and capturing the Île de France.\r\nThis medal was issued to the native troops who took part in this campaign.","briefDescription":"Silver medal, issued to native troops from the three Indian Presidencies for their part in the capture of the Île de France in the Indian Ocean in 1810, English, early 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<font -u>List of Objects in the Art Division, South Kensington, Acquired During the Year 1877, Arranged According to the Dates of Acquisition.</font> London : Printed by George E.
