It is one of a number of utensils with similar decoration, including several mortars and is believed to have been produced in the Alberghetti foundry.","physicalDescription":"A conical leaded bronze mortar wth projecting recessed lip and rope handle. Decorated around the rim with a low relief frieze of a hunting scene, consisting of a repeating pattern of a dog pursuing a boar towards another dog, set above a row of fine bead; below the rim are imbricated scales. On the body are animals, birds, putti and foliate decoration ranged around a coat of arms on each face, both on a scuodo sagomato (a type of Tuscan shield). The handle is flanked by unicorms pursued by putti, and above each is a bird displayed, with an additional birds in flight inserted at the right; below the handle is a floral device surmounted by a bird. On one face is a coat of arms with griffin and lion supporters, and a floral and foliate deveice on which perch two birds; flanked by seated putti blowing horsns, and (above) two birds in flight, further flanked by pairs of birds and cupids. On the opposite face the arms are supported by putti with a device of leaves, corn and flowers surmounted by a bird and flanked by cockerels. To the right of this groups, another foliate device with two birds and a griffin. Opposite the handle, a tree with another scrolled foliate device surmounted by three birds and flanked with two swans and a birds; below which is a small bifurcate siren. Around the base between these devices is a frieze of running animals: starting at the handle (from left to right) a hound, lion, hound, boar, rabbit, fox, hound, and stag.
