Its maker, Dr Paul Hetherington, studied silversmithing at the Brighton College of Art between 1952 and 1958 (with a gap between 1954 and 1956 when he did National Service) under Dunstan Pruden who was part of the community of artist-craftsmen, The Guild of St. Joseph and St. Dominic, established by Eric Gill at Ditchling, in 1921.  \r\n\r\nHetherington did not pursue his silversmithing career for very long.  The 1950s and early 1960s were a lean period for silversmiths.  Not until purchase tax was finally repealed in 1963 did the craft begin to revive.  Despairing of ever being able to make a viable living as a silversmith, Hetherington took a degree in Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art and has since become a respected academic in Byzantine studies.
