Modelled on silver and pewter prototypes brought from Europe, the pieces octagonal form is distinctly European in shape. Special private orders often included objects with shapes and designs copied from European models and drawings, which were brought to China as reference material. The lion-shaped knob on top of the lid is Chinese in origin, while the mythological figures on the lower section of the vessel body are European. The mythological figures in the medallions are probably representations of Europa and the Bull, when the god Jupiter, on falling in love with Europa, transforms into a white bull and abducts her. The designs were probably copied from prints sent to China in the late seventeenth century. ","physicalDescription":"Porcelain coffee pot and lid of European silver shape, with octagonal, tapering body and straight spout bent near the tip and with an 'S'shaped connection to the body; the handle is simple, the base convex and the three feet rounded. The lid's knob is lion-shaped. It is painted in underglaze blue with landscapes imitating pastoral scenes, and elaborate pendant medallions containing mythological creatures. Hatched diaper and floral scrolls on the spout and handle.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"underglazing","id":"AAT48642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain painted in underglaze blue","categories":[{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tea, Coffee & Chocolate wares","id":"THES48886"}],"styles":[{"text":"Kangxi","id":"AAT18482"},{"text":"Chinese export","id":"AAT120350"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2014HB3416","2014HB3417","2010EH9946","2006BF8856"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"7","id":"THES263054"},"free":"","case":"CA15","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"7","id":"THES263054"},"free":"","case":"CA15","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Coffee pot","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700-1710","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1710-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Basil Ionides Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"295","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"140","unit":"mm","qualifier":"foot","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"210","unit":"mm","qualifier":"across spout and handle","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Measured for Europe 1600-1800"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Porcelain coffee pot painted in underglaze blue from a Delft model, China, Qing dynasty, ca. 1700-1710","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Craig","id":"AUTH321140"},"details":"p. 60,  fig. 40.","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"Lu","id":"AUTH321139"},"details":"p.121","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"diaper-work","id":"AAT10144"},{"text":"floral scrolls","id":"x34796"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Coffee pot\r\nPorcelain with decoration in underglaze blue\r\nProbably copied from a model by Lambert van Eenhoorn, owner of a ceramics factory at Delft in the Netherlands.\r\nAbout 1700-1720","date":{"text":"1987","earliest":"1987-01-01","latest":"1987-12-31"}}],"partNumbers":["C.71:1-1963","C.71:2-1963"],"accessionNumberNum":"71","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1963,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Coffee pot","Lid"],"assets":["2019LM9991","2019LM9992","2019LN8581","2019LN8382","2019LP8646","2019LT9038","2019LV2229","2019LV1800","2019LW9815","2019LW8416","2019LW3365"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-19","recordCreationDate":"2008-10-02","availableToBook":false}}
