He studied architecture at the University of Venice and was a member of Gruppo N (founded 1959, Padua, Italy). \n\nThe Up 3 armchair was designed in 1969 for C&B Italia and Pesce had the idea for the chair whilst thinking about the composition of a sponge. The chair is made from a high-density polyurethane foam without an internal structure, an ingenious design that can be vacuum-packed and stored and shipped flat. The chair is part of his Up series of organic and pliable furniture, the most iconic and controversial of the series is the La Mamma chair. In 2019,Pesce commented, 'today, design is an art and because of that must express not only practical content, but also content related to a political, relgious, philosophical and existential reality.'\n\n","physicalDescription":"A turqoise circle shaped chair with fabric stretched over polyurethane foam.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gaetano Pesce","id":"A6235"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"C&B Italia SpA","id":"A28968"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"polyurethane","id":"AAT14495"},{"text":"nylon jersey","id":"x30558"}],"techniques":[{"text":"upholstery","id":"x37978"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"polyurethane foam, nylon-jersey cover","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Plastic","id":"THES49026"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2007BR3573","2007BR3572","2014HC8600"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES300843"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chair","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Novedrate, Italy","id":"x44831"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1969","earliest":"1969-01-01","latest":"1969-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1970","earliest":"1970-01-01","latest":"1970-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"97.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"119","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"66","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Chair, model 'Up 3'; Italian, 1969, designed by Gaetano Pesce and manufactured by C&B Italia, Milan","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"chair","id":"AAT37772"},{"text":"pop art","id":"x47977"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"UP 3 chair \r\nGaetano Pesce (born 1939)\r\n1969, manufactured 1970\r\n\r\nThe UP series of chairs were made from vacuum packed moulded polyurethane foam.
