Taking the format of a concert, the musical is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII, who compete to be both the most notorious victim of the King, as well as the lead singer of their singing group. In its conclusion, the queens realise that their strength lies in their unity and are determined to become more than just one of Henry's 'ex-wives'.\r\n\r\nFirst presented by Cambridge University students at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017, SIX has since gone on to professional productions in the West End, on Broadway and internationally. It has developed a passionate fanbase who have connected with the show's catchy songs and striking costumes inspired by contemporary pop stars. It has also been celebrated for its relative historical accuracy, with songs such as 'No Way' (sung by the character Catherine of Aragon) sampling components from the real-life Queen Catherine's 'Blackfriars speech', in which she pleaded for clemency from King Henry VIII.\r\n\r\nThis costume for Catherine of Aragon, designed by Gabriella Slade, is modelled on both historical Tudor dress and the style of singers Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Jennifer Hudson. Slade won the Off-West End award for SIX in 2019 for Best Costume Design, and was also nominated for an Olivier and WhatsOnStage award in the same year. Slade's costumes have become iconic within the musical's fanbase and have often been re-created by fans, due in part to the distinctive detail ascribed to each character, from their choice of colour to the shape of their headpiece.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Slade, Gabriella","id":"AUTH377364"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"John Kristiansen New York Inc","id":"AUTH377437"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sequins, vacum form black vinyl, nude mesh, gold vinyl/faux leather bias tape, round stud trim, gold spiked stud trim, gold chains, black spandex","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2022NG6373","2022NG6361","2022NG6375","2022NG6365","2022NG6362","2022NG6363","2022NG6364","2022NG6374"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"TRANS5","id":"THES250499"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"TRANS5","id":"THES250499"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"TRANS5","id":"THES250499"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"TRANS5","id":"THES250499"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"TRANS5","id":"THES250499"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"TRANS5","id":"THES250499"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"TRANS5","id":"THES250499"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"theatre costume","id":"x47007"}],[{"text":"leotard","id":"AAT215937"}],[{"text":"theatre costume","id":"x47007"}],[{"text":"necklace","id":"AAT46001"}],[{"text":"headpiece","id":"AAT207342"}],[{"text":"boot","id":"AAT46057"}],[{"text":"boot","id":"AAT46057"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"New York","id":"x29030"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2020","earliest":"2020-01-01","latest":"2020-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"NCOL.393-2022","id":"O1726641"},"association":"Accessory"},{"object":{"text":"NCOL.398-2022","id":"O1726647"},"association":"Accessory"},{"object":{"text":"NCOL.536-2022","id":"O1731165"},"association":"Accessory"}],"creditLine":"Given by Historemix","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"175","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Estimate for dressed mannequin with shoes.","date":{"text":"16/03/2023","earliest":"2023-03-16","latest":"2023-03-16"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Richly embellished black and gold costume for Catherine of Aragon in the musical, SIX, designed by Gabriella Slade, 2020.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Re:Imagining Musicals, 15 October 2022 - 4 February 2024\n\nCostume for Catherine of Aragon in SIX the Musical\r\n2020\r\nTaking the format of a pop concert, SIX the Musical retells the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives, who reclaim their identities and rewrite their victimhood.
