Copley's production, which remained in the repertory until 1986, was first performed on 4 July 1968. David Walker designed the costumes with Henry Bardon designing the sets and William Bundy the lighting. \n\r\nThe design for the costumes is on a page torn from a sketch book and has annotations for the wardrobe department. This is working material, not a re-drawn version for exhibition and sale.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"'Annotated costume design by David Walker for 18th-century style wedding dresses for Fiordiligi and Dorabella in Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte, signed 'D. 1968.' Full length drawing of the costume in brown ink and watercolour with, to right, a half length drawing, in profile, showing the bodice. At lower left, an ink sketch of the back of the bodice. The design shows the evolution of the costume: a note to the upper right of the full length figure reads 'headdress of small flowers net veil' but the veil is only indicated by a few sketchy ink lines, suggesting a later addition. Another annotation, upper left, reads 'veil & headdress must come off easily'. Other notes indicate that the skirt is to be taffeta covered with net and the bodice should have loosely tied bows. On the reverse are doodles of two faces in pen and brown ink and the word 'Cosi'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Walker, David","id":"A4540"},"association":{"text":"costume designers","id":"AAT163428"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"art paper","id":"AAT252788"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ink and watercolour on art paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"Opera","id":"THES263971"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2021NC3232","2021NC3231"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356599"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"costume design","id":"AAT163423"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1968","earliest":"1968-01-01","latest":"1968-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":"production opened on 4 July 1968"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the estate of David Dean","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34.5 ","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"27 ","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Annotated costume design by David Walker for Fiordiligi and Dorabella in Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 1968, signed 'D. 1968'","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.189-2019"],"accessionNumberNum":"189","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2019,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-09","recordCreationDate":"2021-12-21","availableToBook":true}}
