He studied lacquer in the Craft Department at the Kanazawa College of Art. After completing his M.F.A. in 1998, he furthered his training at the Kanzawa Utatsuyama Craft Workshop. \n\nFujino creates bold yet delicate works, combining sculpted forms with textured lacquer finishes. Using wood as his primary material, much of his work consists of utilitarian objects, ranging from tea bowls to portable Shinto shrines (<i>zushi</i>). He also creates lacquered wood sculptures that have been exhibited internationally.\n\nThis tea bowl is part of the<i> Iwahai </i>('Rocky Vessel') series, which the artist has developed since 2013. Layers of black lacquer have been applied to the dramatically carved body of camphor wood, simulating the rough surfaces of rocks.
