","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This embroidered picture is very close to the style of Ann Macbeth’s documented work in terms of the techniques, materials used, and design, with a female figure in a picturesque, voluminous dress, between two rose bushes. It is similar to another embroidery in the V&A collection (T.68-2016) which came in its original, Liberty-labelled frame. This, and the embroidery of the single figure considered here, may have been worked professionally at the Glasgow School of Art by a pupil, or could have been sold as a kit to be worked at home by a skilled amateur embroiderer. This example was also probably retailed by Liberty & Co. in London, either as a finished piece or a kit. Liberty catalogues at the National Art Library also show that Glasgow School of Art style designs were adapted for various home furnishings and accessories such as silk lampshades (fig. 3), cushions and nightdress cases. These products show the commercial potential of the Glasgow style for Liberty’s range of small, relatively accessible home furnishings and gifts.\n\nA line drawing of this design is reproduced in a Liberty & Co. catalogue 'Transfer Designs for application to Needlework' no. 19, with the caption 'Design for Blotter (or Book Cover), Size 9 1/2 inches by 9 1/2 inches. Price, 9d.'","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Embroidered picture, worked in silk thread on linen, with a design of a young woman in a voluminous dress, standing between two rose bushes, in the style of Ann Macbeth for Liberty & Co.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.2-2022"],"accessionNumberNum":"2","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2022,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-10-13","recordCreationDate":"2021-12-03","availableToBook":false}}
