The slip and the glaze are perfectly intact. The design suggests a frieze of saints within canopies which would be arranged horizontally. The preceding two factors plus the large size of the tile (unlike standard sized floor tiles) would suggest that this tile was made for display on or within a wall.\r\nThe image is rough which would suggest the use of a stencil and then handworking rather than a stamp.","briefDescription":"Red earthenware tile impressed with a design of St Paul standing within a row of canopies, inlaid with white clay and covered with a yellow glaze.
