The medal is in the shape of a star of eight points. The centre is enamelled blue, displyaing crossed sabres and the legend 'Reward of Valor' in silver, surrounded by a laurel wreath. This badge has a silver bar, and blue ribbon edged with red. Engraved '3rd class Order of Merit' on the back.\n\nThe Indian Order of Merit (IOM) was a military and civilian decoration established in 1837. For a long time the IOM was the highest decoration that a native member of the British Indian Army could receive and initially it had three divisions. This was changed in 1911 when Indian servicemen became eligible for the Victoria Cross. A civilian division of the IOM also existed between 1902 and 1939, however, it was only conferred very rarely.","physicalDescription":"Badge, silver star of eight points; centre, enamelled blue, displaying crossed sabres and the legend in silver, surrounded by a laurel wreath; silver bar, and blue ribbon edged with red.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelling","id":"x37485"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, enamelled","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"030","id":"THES395499"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Badge","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the late Jas.
