The obverse of this medal reproduces the Apotheosis of the Emperor Napoleon I, a fresco painted in 1853 by French neoclassical artist J.A.D. Ingres, to adorn the ceiling of the hall of the Hotel de Ville in Paris until its destruction by fire during the Commune in 1871. The sketch for this painting still exists in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.\nEugène André Oudiné (1810–1887), French sculptor and medallist. Many of his sculptures are seen in public spaces in Paris.
