Although cut glass first appeared in Edo (present-day Tokyo) in the 1830s, it was not until the 1880s that the craft was developed into an intricate and sophisticated practice under the direction of the British glass-cutting engineer Emmanuel Hauptmann (1848-1924). Hauptmann was hired by the Japanese government for the Shinagawa Glass Factory, which adopted Western-style manufacturing technology.\n\nThis collection of cut-glass tumblers offers an opportunity to explore Asian Art Deco from the early Shōwa period (1926–89), when Japan’s domestic art and aesthetics embraced global and cosmopolitan tastes. \r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Cut glass","id":"AAT206355"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2022NG8924","2022NG8926","2022NG8925"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES398981"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tumbler","id":"AAT43257"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1930s","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Donated by Mitsushige Horiuchi","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tumbler, cut glass, Japan, 1930s, Showa period (1926-1989), Art Deco","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.131-2021"],"accessionNumberNum":"131","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2021,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-09-09","recordCreationDate":"2021-11-12","availableToBook":true}}
