He began his career as a stage designer for Joan Littlewood at her Theatre Workshop, based in Stratford, East London. While there he designed sets for 'A Taste Of Honey', 'The Quare Fellow', 'Fings Ain't What They Used To Be!' and 'Oh! What A Lovely War'. He left the Theatre Workshop to design for the RSC, the National Theatre and Glyndebourne Opera. Bury's bold sets - which often incorporated such materials as metal, glass, and brick and featured dramatic architectural structures—were a radical departure from the painted, decorative sets that had characterized traditional British theatre.\r\n\r\nThis design was for the play 'A Taste of Honey' (1958), the debut of working-class playwright Shelagh Delaney (1938-2011) written and staged by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop when Delaney was 19 years old. While she never followed up the huge success of her first play (which transferred to the West End and Broadway), 'A Taste of Honey' is viewed as one of the first British plays to tackle interracial relationships, homosexuality and single motherhood without sensationalism. She was coined the 'Angry Young Woman', in contrast to the generation of 'Angry Young Men' playwrights working at the Royal Court Theatre.\r\n\r\nThis model was made by Elizabeth Bury in 2006 for the exhibition 'The Art of Theatre Workshop' held at the National Theatre in London. The exhibition was curated by Murray Melvin, former cast member and archivist of the Theatre Royal Stratford East, and the model is an exact depiction of the original set design by her husband.","physicalDescription":"Set model in a perspex box depicting the interior of a bedroom.
